Certificate in Italian CELI – Learn Italian in Italy

CELI Exams

Italian language certification

Solemar Academy is a centre for Certificate of Knowledge of Italian Language (CELI) exams, a qualification awarded by the University for Foreigners Perugia. The CELI exam is recognised by both the Italian Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Why is taking the CELI important?

The CELI is important for many reasons. For one, it is a requirement for foreigners who want to enroll in an Italian university (CELI 3). It is also a requirement for those who need to apply for a long-term residence permit (CELI 1 or CELI Immigrants 1). Finally, it can be a very useful tool for getting a job in Italy. It can also be a personal motivation and a benchmark in your Italian language studies.

Why choose CELI?

In Italy, there are four different sources of accreditation for Italian language students: the University for Foreigners Perugia (who award the CELI), University of Siena (CILS), the Dante Alighieri Society (PLIDA), and University of Rome 3 (ROMA 3).

Each of these is based on the Common European Language Framework, and therefore the content and level structure of the various certifications are quite similar.

The main difference is that the CELI and CVCL with University for Foreigners Perugia are the only Italian qualifications affiliated with the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). This organisation demands absolute best practices, and all CELI exams are stringently monitored to ensure that both the papers and assessment are of a uniform standard.

To give an indication of their scope, the ALTE comprises some of the most important certifications in Europe: Cambridge Exams, and Goethe Institute and DELF certificates.

CELI Standard examinations

This type of exam, called CELI Standard, is designed for students of Italian who want to test themselves or who need to certify their skills for work purposes or to enroll in a university course in Italy (the threshold level for admission is B2). The structure of the exam includes a written paper, a listening comprehension paper and a final interview to assess oral skills. The length of these tests varies depending on the level of the examination being taken.

So if you are looking for your next challenge, pick one of the exam sessions scheduled at Solemar Academy (in March, June or November) and send your application to our school no later than 40 days before the date of the exam.

CELI-i: Italian Language Certificate for Immigrants – examinations for residence or citizenship in Italy

This type of exam awards a certificate which is valid for Italian residence permit (‘Permesso di Soggiorno‘) applications (which require CEFR level A2, CELI 1i) or Italian citizenshipapplications (level B1, CELI 2i). To this end, these papers are aimed at assessing not only the candidates’ language skills but also their civic and intercultural competence.

The examination consists of a written paper (testing reading comprehension, written production and interaction), a listening comprehension paper and an oral exam (a 10/15 minute interview).

The CELI-i exams for Immigrants are held on the dates set by the University for Foreigners of Perugia in February, May, July, September and November. To register, remember to contact us at least 40 days before the exam date you would like.

CELI Exam Preparation

To prepare for the CELI standard or CELI-i exams for immigrants, we recommend enrolling on one of our CELI Examination Preparation Courses at Solemar Academy. The school offers two different types of course:

-One to One Course: This is entirely comprised of individual units with a teacher who is experienced in exam preparation. During these meetings the student will sit mock exams using past papers and work closely with the teacher to overcome any specific challenges.

-Combined Course: This consists of a combination of our standard course with extra One to One lessons. The standard course is useful for honing general Italian skills and interacting with other students. During the one-to-one units, however, the focus is exclusively on exam preparation.
